Ok ladies and gentlemen, I think it is finally time to talk about one of the most popular and most incredibly addictive games in recent history. A game so brutal and intense that it cannot be explained, only lived! This game, the game that is taking the world by storm is of course, PlayerUnknown’s Battleground.
Released to PC on Early access in March 2017, this game has reached incredible heights and only looks to continue to rise as it gets closer to a full release. Designed by Brendan Green off a DayZ: Battle Royal Mod, PlayerUnknown’s Battleground or PUBG for short has smashed records of sales, hours played and consistent players, it has even overtaken DOTA 2 in the most played game on PC, which before that, had been unheard of.
The concept of the game is to be the last gamer standing. Now, this concept might sound simple enough, but there are many twists, turns, thrills and scares along the way. Players are thrown from a plane, scattering themselves over a fictional island. As the gamers land, there is a mad dash to find guns, equipment, armour and different types of med packs and health boosts. On top of this, once everyone has landed a safe zone begins to close in on the players. This safe zone, or what is only referred to as ‘the circle’ by players closes in to bring the remaining survivors closer together. All the while the players are trying to hide/kill and survive all for that glorious Chicken Dinner at the end and the epic bragging rights that ensue.
For me, this game has both positives and negatives. I have found this game to be totally addictive and I can’t even explain why. It has such a simple concept and in doing so has got everybody I’ve talked to totally hooked and hungry for that victory. I have been thoroughly impressed by the speed the developers have attended to the bugs, such as a vehicle hitting an invisible wall and I am looking forward to seeing what else is to be fixed. The developers have also added different weather modes with rain and fog which give a different experience to a player’s game. There is even a vaulting action and new maps that have been added with more to come.
I have heard good things about the future of PUBG with talk of including an official Zombies mode, this after many streamers made an unofficial version in their own custom matches. I believe that this game will continue to grow in popularity and will get to even greater heights. I won’t be giving this game the perfect score it could deserve just because of the a few bugs that need to be worked out and because of the recent flood of hackers or cheaters that have entered into the game. People can now run faster than cars, know exactly where you are, shoot through walls and use hacks like aimbot to always get a head shot and this, I feel, destroys the integrity of the game.
Despite this I am staying positive and know that the developers will be able to fix all the bugs and work out a way to punish these hackers. I give PlayerUnknown’s Battleground a 9/10 because it is the most intense and addictive game that I have probably ever played besides the classic Star Wars Battlefront 2 and I plan to put in many more hours into this game.
