Dragon Ball FighterZ Review

It is a bit late for this, but I think considering the player base has dropped so much, Dragon Ball Fighter Z needs a bit of a boost. Now, I am not a very good fighting game player, I’ve tried street fighter and was instantly killed online but I absolutely love the Dragon Ball anime, and this was a must have for me and honestly, I wasn’t disappointed. The 2D game-play and art style gives this game a fantastic, old school look which is amazing and totally helps with the manic and frantic game-play of a three-person team where everyone can use their special at once.

What I really like about this game is that it is quite welcoming to beginners with easy combos so that everyone can do their favourite Kamehameha or final flashes. It really does make it easy for you to jump in and compete, of course pro fighting gamers are able to utilise these combos exactly when they want to at the right time which is very apparent when you go from versing the very easy AI in story mode to a ranked match online where everyone absolutely is better than you.

The three-person team lets you make a team of your favourite characters from the Dragon Ball Universe with androids, Frieza, Cell, etc then a few from the new Super Saga with Hit, Beerus and even the new character of Android 21 who was created for a completely new and original storyline especially for this game. I do really like the three-person style because you are able to use your other team members for boosts, let resting members heal and just help create even more of a frantic match.

The storyline for this game was created especially for this game and it lets you live out all your dreams of being apart of this awesome universe, especially since all the characters actually address a nameless, faceless character that is actually you. You feel like you are being talked to by all the characters! I have to admit, I got a few chills when Goku started talking to me. It was awesome!

I have really enjoyed trying my hand at the online community and it is such a rush when you finally, after many, many hours of trying get that first ranked match win. Then it takes the same amount of time and defeat to get the second one. But it does really help your confidence when you verse your friends in local play when you have a team that you know wins online.

Looking at the downside of this game though, there are a few things that I don’t like. It starts with the fact that already, not even a month in has lost 80% of their player base and it really saddens me because I love this game already. The other things that keep this game from a perfect score is the fact that I read there were connection issues during the beta testing and they still have not been fixed. I mean sometimes when I am getting destroyed getting disconnected is great, but I would still prefer it not to happen. Also, the story mode itself is a bit too easy and too long between each cutscene. There are only so many easy battles against bots that I can take before I started finding the quickest route to get to the boss fights.

But besides from those few downs, I have really loved playing this game and it is really the only thing keeping me from only playing PUBG which I still play a lot of. It is a fun game that really pushes you to get better, so you can use those easy combos to the best of your abilities with your favourite Dragon Ball characters in a beautiful and colourful game. I give Dragon Ball Fighter Z a 9 out of 10 and I really hope more people jump on it.
